U-Line has built undercounter refrigeration in Milwaukee since 1962 and does essentially nothing else. That specialisation matters when something fails, because undercounter equipment has one dominant weakness that full-size refrigerators don't: it lives sealed inside a cabinet cavity and breathes through a single front grille. Block that grille and the unit slowly cooks itself — which is what most U-Line service calls turn out to be.

Common failures
What goes wrong on U-Line.
Blocked front grille starving the condenser
The single biggest cause of U-Line failures. The unit exhausts through the toe grille, and once it's packed with dust, pet hair or a nearby cabinet panel the compressor runs hot and long for less and less cooling.
Clear ice machine scaled up by hard water
Bay Area water is hard, and a clear ice machine runs a lot of it through a heated harvest cycle. Scale slows production and clouds the ice long before anything mechanical fails — descaling is the actual repair on most of these.
Wine zone drifting off setpoint
A failing sensor, a tired evaporator fan or a door seal letting warm air in. On a wine cabinet even a few degrees defeats the purpose, so these get flagged early by owners.
Drain or drain pump backing up on ice models
Ice makers produce meltwater continuously and it has to go somewhere. A blocked drain line or a failed pump shows up as water in the cabinet base.
Door seals and hinges out of alignment
Undercounter doors and drawers get opened constantly and sit at kicking height. Seals compress, hinges sag, and the unit runs permanently to compensate.
Outdoor units corroding at the seals and fasteners
Exposed installs on decks and outdoor kitchens take weather that indoor units never see, and it shows first at the gasket line and the hardware.

What's different about servicing U-Line.
Airflow is checked before anything else
On undercounter equipment the cavity and the grille are part of the appliance. We measure clearance and clear the condenser before diagnosing a compressor, because that ordering saves owners a lot of money.
Ice machines are treated as water equipment
A clear ice machine is a plumbing appliance as much as a refrigeration one. The water path, filter and drain get inspected on every visit, not just the sealed system.
Working in place, in a cabinet cavity
These units are set into millwork with a tight tolerance. We service them in position wherever possible and protect the surrounding cabinetry when a unit does have to come out.
Installation faults get named as installation faults
A surprising number of U-Line calls trace back to how the unit was built in — no clearance, a solid toe kick, no drain fall. We tell you when the appliance isn't the problem.

Questions
Before you call.
My U-Line stopped getting cold but the fan runs. What's wrong?
Start with the front grille. Undercounter units reject heat through that single vent, and once it's blocked the compressor can't shed heat no matter how hard it works. We clear and test airflow before condemning any sealed system.
My clear ice machine makes cloudy ice or barely any. Is it dead?
Almost certainly not — it's scale. Hard Bay Area water deposits minerals through the water path and harvest cycle, and production drops off gradually. A full descale and water system service restores most of these.
How often should a U-Line ice machine be serviced?
Roughly annually in this area, more often on well water. It's genuine maintenance rather than an upsell — descaling on schedule is what keeps these units out of a repair call.
My wine cabinet is a few degrees off. Does that matter?
For wine storage, yes — it's the whole function of the appliance. The usual causes are a drifted sensor, a weakening evaporator fan or a door seal letting warm air in, and all three are repairable.
Do you service outdoor U-Line units?
Yes. Outdoor-rated equipment on decks and in outdoor kitchens is part of our regular work, and we check corrosion at the seals and fasteners as a matter of course.
Can you fix a unit that was built into cabinetry badly?
We can service the appliance in place and tell you exactly what the installation is costing you. If the cavity has no clearance or the toe kick is solid, no repair will hold — we'll say so and explain what needs changing.
