Burning smell
Stop using it. Lint has reached the heater housing, and this is the failure that starts house fires.
Loud squealing or thumping
Worn drum support rollers or a glide bearing — a mechanical wear part, not the motor.
Won't start at all
Usually a door switch or a start switch, occasionally a blown thermal fuse acting as a safety cutout.
Gas smell near the dryer
Shut it off and call. A loose fitting or a failing valve needs a leak test before the dryer runs again.

Common causes
Why it breaks down.
Lint restricts airflow long before you notice
A dryer that's venting poorly runs hotter and longer for the same result, which is exactly what shortens heating element and igniter life.
Heating elements and igniters are wear parts
Both cycle on and off hundreds of times per load. Eventually the element burns through or the igniter's coating wears out.
Belts stretch and glide bearings dry out
The belt and support system that spins the drum wears gradually — a squeal today is usually a snapped belt within weeks.
Bay Area laundry closets restrict venting by design
Tight closets often mean long duct runs with multiple elbows — more resistance than the dryer was designed to push air through.
Dryer sheets coat the moisture sensor
Residue from dryer sheets builds up on the sensor strips over time, which is why moisture sensing gets less accurate with age.

Every load opens and closes the door switch — it's a small part doing a lot of work, and eventually it wears out.

- Have the vent line professionally cleaned yearlyThe lint trap only catches a fraction of what goes through — the duct itself needs clearing on a schedule.
- Don't overload the drumClothes need room to tumble through the airflow. An overstuffed load dries unevenly and strains the belt and motor.
- Check the outside vent flap while it's runningIf it's not flapping open with strong airflow, something downstream is restricted.
- Keep gas connections visually inspectedA yearly glance at the flexible gas line for kinks or wear catches a problem before it becomes a smell.
- Wipe the moisture sensor strips occasionallyA quick wipe with rubbing alcohol keeps the auto-dry cycle reading accurately instead of over- or under-drying.

Yes. Gas connections are handled by technicians licensed for gas appliances, and we leak-test the line before leaving.
How often should the vent be cleaned?
Once a year for a typical household, twice if you run several loads a day or the duct run is long. It is the single cheapest thing you can do for a dryer.
Can you service a dryer in a closet or stacked?
Yes. Tight laundry closets are standard in Bay Area apartments and we work in them daily.
How much does dryer repair cost?
Depends on the part — a thermal fuse or belt is a modest fix, a heating element or gas valve costs more. We quote in writing after diagnosis.
