If any of this sounds like your unit, the diagnosis is usually straightforward and the repair is same-visit.
Not cooling, but the light works
Usually a failed evaporator fan, a frosted-over coil or a start relay that stopped switching the compressor.
Freezer frosts over
A defect in the defrost cycle — heater, thermostat or timer. Left alone it blocks airflow and kills cooling in the fresh food side.
Water pooling under the unit
A clogged defrost drain or a cracked drain pan. Cheap to fix, expensive to ignore once it reaches the floor.
Loud clicking or humming
The compressor is trying to start and failing. Catching this early often saves the compressor itself.
Ice maker jammed or making nothing
Almost always a frozen fill tube or a stuck ejector arm, not the compressor. We check the water supply before opening the module.
Door won't seal, condensation inside
A worn or torn gasket, or hinges that have sagged enough to leave a gap. Either way, the compressor is running overtime to compensate.
Runs constantly, never cycles off
Usually a dirty condenser coil starving the system of airflow, or a thermostat that's stuck calling for cooling.
Interior lights or control panel dead
A failed door switch, a blown fuse on the control board, or a wiring fault behind the panel — rarely the bulb itself.

Condenser coils clog with dust and pet hair
Every fridge has a coil that needs airflow to reject heat. Once it's coated, the compressor works harder and runs hotter for the same result.
Door seals wear out from daily use
A gasket that's lost its seal lets warm, humid air in constantly — the compressor never really gets to rest.
The defrost system fails quietly
A stuck defrost heater or timer lets frost build on the evaporator coil gradually, restricting airflow long before you notice anything's wrong.
Compressors have a natural lifespan
Most sealed systems are built for 12 to 15 years of continuous running. Past that, a compressor failure is wear, not a defect.
Water lines and ice maker valves take on mineral scale
Bay Area hard water leaves deposits inside inlet valves and fill tubes over years, restricting flow until the ice maker slows or stops.
Overpacked shelves block internal airflow
Not a defect — just physics. A fridge packed solid can't circulate cold air evenly, so the compressor runs longer to compensate.
Care tips
Keep it running longer.
- Vacuum the condenser coils twice a yearBehind or underneath the unit, coils collect dust that insulates them from the air they need to shed heat into.
- Test the door seal with a dollar billClose it on the bill and pull. If it slides out easily, the gasket has lost its grip and it's time to replace it.
- Leave breathing room on the shelvesAirflow inside matters as much as airflow outside. Don't pack it edge to edge.
- Replace the water filter every six monthsA clogged filter is the most common reason for slow or hollow ice, and it's the cheapest fix on this list.
- Keep a few inches of clearance behind built-insEven cabinetry-integrated units need a path for hot air to escape — check the manufacturer's clearance spec.
- Don't set it colder than it needs to be37°F in the fridge and 0°F in the freezer is plenty. Colder settings just add wear for no real benefit.

How fast can you come out?
Calls before noon usually get a same-day window. Refrigerators are prioritized over other appliance calls because of food loss.
Is my refrigerator worth repairing?
As a rule: if the unit is under 8 years old, or it's a built-in like Sub-Zero or Thermador, repair almost always wins. Beyond 12 years on a standard freestanding unit, we'll usually tell you to replace.
Do you service built-in and column refrigerators?
Yes. Built-ins are a large part of our work — Sub-Zero, Thermador, Viking and Miele columns included.
How much does refrigerator repair cost?
It depends entirely on the part — a start relay is a minor fix, a sealed-system or compressor job is major surgery. We diagnose first and quote in writing before touching anything.
Why is water pooling under my fridge?
Almost always a clogged defrost drain or a cracked drain pan. It's an easy fix if you catch it early, and a flooring problem if you don't.
Can a refrigerator be fixed the same day I call?
In most cases, yes — we carry the common parts (relays, fans, thermistors, door seals) on the van. Sealed-system repairs sometimes need a return visit for parts.
