Cooktop repair
in the Bay Area
A cooktop call could mean a burner, a switch or a circuit board depending on whether it's gas, electric or induction — three different failure patterns under one appliance category. We carry parts and diagnostic gear for all three, so guessing which one you have before you call doesn't matter.

Symptoms
What we see most.
If any of this sounds like your unit, the diagnosis is usually straightforward and the repair is same-visit.
Igniter clicks but the burner stays dark
Ten seconds of clicking with no flame almost always means a dirty igniter tip or a spark module that's stopped delivering enough voltage. We check the voltage before assuming it needs replacing.
Flame burns low, yellow, or leans to one side
A lazy or lopsided flame is usually an airflow problem, not a gas-supply one — a clogged port, a burner cap seated wrong, or a mixture that's drifted out of adjustment.
You can smell gas near the cooktop
Shut the gas off at the valve and call before you do anything else. It's almost always a loose fitting or an aging valve, and we pressure-test the whole line before we leave.
A coil or radiant element stays cold
Could be the element, the switch feeding it, or the socket it plugs into. We test all three with a meter instead of swapping the most obvious part first.
A pan won't 'lock on' to an induction zone
Before we blame the coil, we rule out the obvious — non-magnetic cookware. If a magnet sticks to the pan and the zone still won't heat, the fault is usually the coil or the board beneath it.
The glass surface has a crack or a deep scratch
A crack in ceramic glass can expose live components once liquid works its way in. We take that zone out of service immediately and quote an OEM panel.
Touch controls or knobs stopped responding
Often a ribbon cable that's worked loose behind the panel, or one section of a control board rather than the whole thing — which is why we open it up before quoting a full board swap.
One zone runs at full power no matter the setting
The part meant to throttle that zone has failed in the “on” position — an infinite switch on electric, a stuck valve on gas.
The cooktop trips the breaker when you turn it on
That's a short, not bad luck. Resetting the breaker again just repeats the problem — we find the shorted element or damaged wiring before the cooktop goes back into service.
What we service
Gas, electric & induction — different repairs, same team.
Gas cooktops
Gas failures tend to be mechanical — a part wears, sticks or clogs, and the fix is usually visible once the burner cap comes off.
- Igniter and spark module swaps
- Burner port and orifice cleaning
- Gas valve and regulator work
- Full leak test before we close it up
Electric cooktops
Electric failures are circuit problems — an element, a switch or a connection gives out, so we trace the circuit instead of swapping parts on a guess.
- Radiant and coil element replacement
- Surface switch and socket repair
- Ceramic glass panel replacement
- Breaker and wiring fault tracing
Induction cooktops
Induction failures live in the electronics — the coil and the board underneath it do the work, so diagnosis means reading the board, not the burner.
- Coil replacement
- Control board and sensor repair
- Cookware-detection troubleshooting
- Fault code lookup and repair
Common causes
Why it breaks down.
Daily heat cycling wears switches first
Every burner or zone you turn on puts a switch or igniter through a full heat-and-cool cycle. Those are the parts built to wear out — usually well before the cooktop itself is old.
Boiled-over food reaches places it shouldn't
A pot that boils over sends liquid and sugar into igniter ports, sensor housings and touch panels — none of which were designed to get wet.
Bay Area hard water leaves mineral scale behind
Splashes and steam carry mineral content that dries onto induction sensors and burner parts, insulating them from the readings they need to work correctly.
Older circuits get pushed harder than they were built for
Plenty of Bay Area kitchens run a 240V cooktop off wiring installed long before induction was common — loose connections and undersized circuits are a frequent root cause.
Control boards don't age well next to heat
Sitting a few inches above active burners for years takes a toll on any circuit board. We see board failures cluster around the eight-to-twelve-year mark.
Cookware choice matters more than people expect on induction
A warped pan, the wrong material, or a pan smaller than the zone gets blamed on “the cooktop” when the fix is really a different pot.
Care tips
Keep it running longer.
- Pull the burner caps and clean underneath monthlyGrease collects where you can't see it. A burner lighting unevenly usually just needs its cap and port cleared out.
- Match your cookware to the zone, not just the burnerOn induction, a pan smaller than the coil wastes energy and can trigger error codes. On gas, a pan too small for the flame wastes heat around the edges.
- Clean glass tops while they're warm, never hotSugar and starch spills etch ceramic glass if left to bake on. A quick wipe once the surface has cooled a little prevents that permanently.
- Lift cookware instead of sliding itCast iron or heavy stainless dragged across glass is the single most common cause of scratches that eventually become cracks.
- A blue flame means it's burning correctlyYellow, orange or flickering flames point to incomplete combustion — worth a look before it turns into a bigger repair.
- Keep the control area drySteam and condensation around knobs and touch panels cause shorts slowly, over time. Wipe them down as part of your normal cleanup.
Pricing
Priced after diagnosis, not before.
Parts and labor for cooktop repair vary too much by brand and fault to publish a flat rate honestly. A technician diagnoses the issue on site and gives you the exact price in writing — nothing starts until you approve it, and the diagnostic fee is applied to the repair.

Questions
Before you call.
Why does my gas burner click but not light?
Usually a dirty igniter tip or a spark module that's no longer generating a strong enough spark. Both are quick, inexpensive fixes once we've confirmed which one it is.
How much does cooktop repair cost?
It depends on the part and the brand — a switch or module costs less than a control board or a glass panel. We diagnose first and give you the exact number in writing before any work starts, so there's no guessing on your end.
How fast can someone come look at my cooktop?
Same-day for most calls placed before early afternoon. A gas smell or a tripped breaker jumps the queue regardless of when you call.
Which cooktop brands do you actually stock parts for?
Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Miele, Bosch, Gaggenau and Bertazzoni come up often enough in Bay Area kitchens that we carry parts for them directly, alongside GE, Samsung and LG for everyday cooktops.
Is it still safe to cook on a cracked glass cooktop?
No — stop using that zone. A crack can let spills reach live components underneath, and it only gets worse with more heat cycles.
Can you switch my cooktop from natural gas to propane?
Yes, using the manufacturer's conversion kit for that exact model. It's not something we improvise without the correct kit.
