These symptoms guide the diagnosis; they do not identify a failed part on their own. Repair timing depends on the fault, access and parts availability.
Blows cool air in heating mode
A stuck reversing valve, or the system defaulting to backup heat because it can't reach setpoint.
Outdoor unit iced over
A failed defrost board or sensor. A light frost is normal in cold weather, a solid block of ice is not.
Runs constantly and never satisfies
Low charge, an undersized system, or duct losses eating the output before it reaches the rooms.
Electric bill jumped
Auxiliary resistance heat is running full time — expensive, and always a symptom of something else.

Do heat pumps work in Bay Area winters?
Extremely well. Our climate almost never drops to the temperatures where heat pumps lose efficiency, which is why they're replacing gas furnaces here faster than anywhere else.
Are there rebates for heat pumps?
Local and state incentive programs exist and change regularly. We'll tell you what's current at the time of your estimate rather than promising a number that expired last quarter.
Can a heat pump replace my furnace entirely?
In most Bay Area homes, yes. Where ducts are undersized, we'll say so before you spend money on equipment that can't deliver.
